The book, “I am Annie Mae”, is the compelling story of my grandmother, Annie Mae Hunt who rose above personal battles and 19th -century society’s restrictions on womanhood to become a political activist, community leader, entrepreneur and a noted author; however, her book is a much greater story considering she was a former cotton picker from Navasota, Texas with an elementary education. Her extraordinary story reveals how and why. Also, the book includes the oral history passed on to her by her grandmother, a former slave and midwife in the 1800’s. Mrs. Hunt has written an invaluable book that spans over 120 years of Texas history. It is a collection of oral history and events of her life. Her book represents the best promise of oral history – the ability to document the lives of ordinary working class people.

Reading the book will make you laugh out loud, relive memories, think about experiences and even shed tears. Her extraordinary story is truly incredible.
